Dear KCBC family,
In my mind, the overturning of Roe v. Wade is a great constitutional victory for the rights of unborn children and families in the U.S. I thank God for his mercy and pray that those precious children, who would have otherwise had their lives taken from them, will grow up to do amazing things as believers in Jesus Christ!
However, as Christians, it is also good to remember that we live in a pluralistic society. And since many of our neighbors do not believe the same as we do, it would be wise for us to think before speaking. Proverbs 24:17-18 gives us this reminder:
Don’t gloat when your enemy falls, and don’t let your heart rejoice when he stumbles, or the LORD will see, be displeased, and turn his wrath away from him.
Be glad? Sure. Rejoice? Definitely. But let’s be careful our rejoicing doesn’t turn into gloating because God’s not gloating. So with this in mind, here are some things to remember when conversing with others, either online or in-person:
Abortion rates are now the lowest they’ve ever been since the 1970s. Even without the defeat of Roe v. Wade, abortion has been on the decline for many years. We need to keep supporting the things that have led to this decline beyond legislation.
Nearly 25% of women in the U.S. have had an abortion before age 45. This means if you have at least four female friends, chances are one of them has had an abortion. So let’s be careful with our words.
Most (54%) abortions are happening among women who profess to be Christians. Why? The reasons are likely complicated, but this is something to consider when talking with fellow believers.
Some fear that overturning Roe v. Wade will lead to the overturning of other landmark cases that deal with contraception, privacy in the bedroom, and same-sex marriage. These fears aren’t unfounded. So even if we believe the constitution should not protect contraception, same-sex marriage, etc., we should still be humble enough to acknowledge that many people have legitimate concerns about future ramifications.
Anyway, let’s remember that the people we talk with are real people. They are often in difficult situations, and the reasons for their decisions and beliefs aren’t always straightforward. So may our words be seasoned with grace and the love of Christ (Col. 4:6).
For the gospel,
Pastor Tim
