In Light of Recent Events
In light of the recent events that occurred at our nation's capitol building yesterday I thought I should share some biblical perspective.
There are many perspectives roaming around on the Internet that I've heard. Some see the storming of the capitol building, including the death of 4 protesters, as a sacrifice Americans must be willing to make to save our nation. Others either see what happened as inevitable, and largely the fault of democrats and liberal media, or they blame Trump and his supporters for inciting violence.
Perspectives vary widely but I think the majority of people believe all sides are at least partly at fault and recognize the events as a national tragedy, regardless of who is to blame. But what we ultimately think depends largely upon who we trust since very few of us have any first hand knowledge of the events.
Who do you trust?
Last night, as I was preparing to sleep, God allowed the words of Psalm 37 to remind me to keep trusting in Him. The Psalm reminded me that sometimes the line between the "good guys" and the "bad guys" is a little blurry, but God knows who the wicked are and He will not allow them to prosper in the end. My job, then, which is much harder than it seems, is to trust God to work it all out for His glory in His timing.
The whole chapter of Psalm 37 is awesome, but here are a few highlights:
Psalm 37:1-3 (ESV)
Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend [lit. feed on] faithfulness.
Psalm 37:7-9 (ESV)
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.
Psalm 37:12-13 (ESV)
The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him, but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming.
Psalm 37:39-40 (ESV)
The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.
Our job isn't to necessarily distinguish the wicked from the righteous because from our perspective they are sometimes indistinguishable! The wicked are not just those who do evil, but those who trust in themselves. The righteous trust in God.
The Bible's perspective is the best perspective. It's a humble perspective but it's the only true and timeless perspective that we all could use a little more of right now. Don't you agree?
